The Message in a Movie

I finally got watch the third installment of the Barbershop series and I must say it was really a damn good movie. I loved how they really took the time to spotlight the violence going on in Chicago. They went and addressed the young black on black crime. The killing committed by gangs and most importantly the recruitment and brain washing that so many of them do in order to reach these young, impressionable teens.

They really delved into the issue of crimes being committed by us to us, and how we take out some of promising young people because of stupid ass gang shit, and petty jealousy. I truly appreciate also how they touched on the issue of martial hanky panky and how women like to get a man who’s already gotten. They touched on the struggles of a Black man trying to raise his son and provide the best he can. It touched on the diverse personalities of Black men and how just because you don’t act like the stereotypical male, it doesn’t mean you’re gay or  not.

They really did a brilliant job of showing how a marriage needs 100 percent effort on all fronts from both parties, not just one or the other. It showed that as much as the sex, and companionship is needed, that communication piece is just as critical also. I found it to be refreshing that they addressed so many of the issues facing the Black community in major metropolitan cities in America. They showed that in order to truly take our inner cities back, it starts with the common man. Politicians won’t do shit without incentive, motivation, or public scrutiny forcing them to do something about it.

They fully addressed how easily influenced our young men are today by the flashy things, instead of being impressed by the steady things. We see that money and power and popularity, seem to trump smarts, stability and individualism. The movie chronicled  fathers trying their best to raise their sons, being great role models and sometimes that still not being enough to stop the temptation. We see how two friends take different paths. One, because of his previous misdoings stepping up to walk away from the gang and the other needing to be faced with reality to understand that life was dangerous.

If you really want to true picture of why the struggle is so real, I do implore you to watch this movie. You will appreciate the struggle, get some laughs and also relate to many of the characters portrayed on screen.

If you’ve already seen the movie, which I’m sure most of you have, tell me what you think.

Empire Strikes It Right

So I just finished watching the season of Empire and I was absolutely fascinated by this episode. I know many have been turned off by the show after the beginning of this season was a little too Hollywood cameo filled and the writing was very sporadic and not tight. But damn it, I must say that by and large since the season has returned they have delivered show after show of must see t.v.

Tonight we found out that Luscious’ mom isn’t dead but is alive and well. We found out that the FBI is going to come back after the Lyon family. We saw the damn producer for the awards show reveal that he’s a queer and fucked around with Jamal, like OMG. We see that Jamal might be fucking around with Tiana again. We see that Rhonda is starting to piece together that boo boo kitty might have been responsible for killing her unborn child. We saw the Lyon’s come together and create a beautiful song that was just perfect. And then we saw Luscious’ mom show her true colors.

I mean how much can you fit into an episode. Oh, and lets not forget that Cookie’s assistant planted a seed in her sister’s head about being jealous. My goodness, the show may not still be for you but damn it did for me tonight. I was truly mesmerized by the collab that they did tonight. I thought it just made you sit back and think and appreciate that music and the voices that they have. Hakeem and his verse was fye. I can appreciate where the story lines and are going and the cliff hangers that they keep dangling are enticing.

They continue to shine the light on rebuking the stereotype that gay men all look and act alike. They continue to dig deeper into what it means to have your first love around and remembering all the up and downs that keeps you from letting go, especially when you have kids together and are in business too. I’m really happy that they went away from spinning Jamal from gay, to bi/curious or whatever they did and continued to explore the dynamics of gay men.

I’m excited to see what happens the next two weeks. One of the Lyons will die and there will be so much left to cover before they sign off for the summer. The music, the drama, the plots and the stories. Can’t wait to see what happens next.

Holiday at The Movies

So I’m going to tell the truth about something that shouldn’t be that much of a secret. I’m a big ass kid at heart, tehe. This holiday season I went to see Alvin and the Chipmunks: Road Trip. If I’m being completely honest, I love the Chipmunks and I’ve seen every movie that they’ve come out with. This time it was decided that we would go see them on the big screen. And damn it, I was absolutely excited to watch my lil homies do they thing.

From Alvin being his typical mischievous and Theodore providing his cute, innocent fun, to Simon being..well Simon; this movie doesn’t disappoint from the fun and laughter that all the movies provided. Also, I love when they sang and the songs that they gave me this was were songs I could jam too in my seat. I was like a big kid in a candy store when they was hitting all the songs from the year. Bopping my head, tapping my feet and enjoying those loveable little, fury creatures. If you’ve got kids it’s definitely a must and if you are a big kid and just love kiddie movies go see the crew.

The second movie I saw this holiday weekend was Daddy’s Home. I have to say that I’m partial to Will Ferrell movies because he is a damn fool. He truly didn’t disappoint in this movie. Mark Wahlberg also did his part to make this movie a real must see. It had all the stuff you could ask for. It was funny and dramatic, had surprises and an intriguing story line. It really highlights how hard it is to be a step-parent in today’s society.

It highlights the dynamic between the cool, hip but unprepared father versus the responsible, less cool but more stable step father. The lessons that are learned from this funny movie are things that you can apply truly to your every day life. You learn how to really manage this difficult situation, but you most certainly learn what not to do too. LOL, Will Ferrell makes being a step-father cool and also very comedic at the same time.

If you like to laugh and you like surprises check out this movie. There will be things that you really don’t expect and the guest appearance at the end absolutely caught me off guard. Just when you think the movie gave you all you wanted,  it gives you just a little more to send you home with. If you got some free time go check it out. Promise you will laugh a good bit.

The Christmas Miracle

I went to the movies this past weekend and saw Krampus. Now before I get into the movie I want to say that this time of the year is without a doubt my favorite time of the year. I love the holiday season. The time that folks get to spend with their loves ones and the smiles that you see across folks faces. It just seems to be that when the calendar turns to November and December people get just a little bit nicer and treat each other just a little bit better.

Given that first paragraph, I also know that this time of the year is extremely hard for some. They may have lost loved ones this time of the year or their loved ones aren’t around anymore to share these beautiful moments with. It could also be that they have to work a lot or just don’t have anyone to spend the holidays with. Could also be that money is funny and you can’t really buy anyone anything, so this time of the year is a drag when you see all the commercials about buying things for the holiday to show your love.

I am on the record many times for saying that I feel that Thanksgiving gets massively overlooked because there isn’t a retail pitch to be made aside from spending money on food to fix for your family and friends. Christmas gets all the pub because there is commercial value there. Gifts galore and spend, spend, spend. Sometimes we forget that this time of the year is meant to give thanks and spend that quality times with those that you love and cherish the most.

Sometimes I think if we remembered that the gift of Christmas is having people to spend it with that love you and appreciate you whether you can afford to buy them gifts or not.

If you see this movie Krampus, one of the messages you will take away is the power of the belief of the Christmas magic. Santa Clause and the Elves and just the holiday magic itself. You believe that this time of year allows for you to put aside you petty differences and believe in the power of the spirit and the coming together so celebrate and enjoy the company of one another.

Those movie plays on the fact that kids are the precious angels that protect Christmas and the miracle that encompasses it. That when you spoil it too soon for them and you take away that belief and magic, that the “evil” of Christmas will display. That is, that we forget why we are coming together and we focus on the things that separate us rather than what binds us together.

Children, families, individuals are the pulse behind Christmas. Seeing your child run to the tree and open all their presents. Having that Christmas party where everyone is laughing and dancing, playing games and just getting lost in the moment. Making those lasting memories that when you’re apart you can think back to, look back at and smile because you created something that will last forever.

Folks that’s the Christmas miracle. Giving your time, energy or money to those less fortunate who can’t afford what you can. Letting others know that even though they may feel forgotten, you remember them. The power is inside each and everyone of us. What we do with it and how we use it is makes the season great every year. So come on folks take some time to laugh and play. Sing some songs, give some gifts and most of all share your Christmas spirit, because that’s how you will keep the Christmas Miracle going for decades and decades.

Happy Holidays America

Damn It..

So I have to say that one of my greatest joys is going to the movies and one of my favorite types of movies to watch is scary movies. I went to go see the final installment of the Paranormal Activity series last night and when I say they got this one right, damn it they had me shook for a minute. I am very happy to see that they ended the series as good as they started the series. I went to see the first Paranormal Activity and must admit that kept my lights on all night long in my house and didn’t go to sleep for hours.

This time around I was a little bit better. I did cut the lights off, eventually, but I didn’t go to sleep for hours and my tv was on all night long. Ha! I know some of you may say, you’re such a big baby and my answer is you damn right. Those movies have a very real life element to them and when you start talking about spirits and demons, you have reached a point of realness for me. I really enjoyed the 3D enhancement of the movie last night too. I can tell you that everyone in my movie theatre had a “OH SHIT”, moment.

But I also have to admit one of the funniest things that happened was this tall, dark skin boy was trying to run back up the steps to his seat, but be cute about it and fell coming up the steps. Man when I tell you it took everything in my soul to keep from crying and laughing in his face as he walked by my seat. Instead, I composed myself and waited until he took his seat and then lost it. Listen, I’m all for looking cute but when you can’t do it without harming yourself, maybe you just shouldn’t do it.

So I would have to say combining the experience of this movie, the great effects, the really good acting, the funny parts mixed with the scary aspects of the movie and the comedy in the movie theatre, I was very pleased with the entire outcome. I’m not going to give too much of a review in this post because I want folks to see it and don’t want to spoil it, but just know that if you like these kinds of movies or the series as a whole, you will definitely enjoy this movie.

Happy watching and let me know what you think or thought about it. A lil dialogue would be fun
